Session: Complaints and Gripes – More Than One Meaning
Influence of culture on meaning of words and phrases; techniques for interpreting words like complaints and gripes when words stay the same, but meanings change; self-assessment; self-correction; guided performance role plays.
Description: Skilled interpreters are supposed to be ready for anything and prepared to interpret in the most complicated of encounters. This interactive session will provide strategies and guided practice for preparing for the encounters and the language required for successful communication. Vocabulary focus on terms that change meaning based on content. Get constructive feedback and improve skills during this 3.5 hour workshop. Presenter: Shawna Stevenoski, CCI, CMI-Spanish
- Identify 3 influences of culture on meanings of words and phrases
- Practice 3 tips to improve communication without getting involved in the conversation
- Guided practice in consecutive mode with challenge to render at 90% + accuracy
- Successfully complete workshop to earn continuing education credits: 2 hours performance based continued education credits; 1 hour non-performance based ethics
Advanced level. Individuals must complete session attendance and evaluation requirements to receive certificate of participation. This session is nationally accredited for 3.0 instructional hours with WI Courts CIP and CCHI. IMIA/NBCMI approved 0.3 CEUs.
